Cloud

This is about running your I.T. on a pay as you go or pay as you use basis rather than building and maintaining the infrastructure in house (or “on-prem”)

The terminology built up around it:

Cloud computing services can be private, public or hybrid.

  • Private services are delivered from your own data center to internal users with a dedicated VPN or leased line connection
  • With a public cloud model, a third-party  provider delivers the  service over the internet from their data centres which can be situated anywhere in the world.  There has to be a physical server somewhere despite the term ‘cloud’.
  • hybrid cloud is to create an environment that takes advantage of all that a public cloud infrastructure can provide, while still maintaining control over mission-critical and commercially sensitive data.

There are broadly three type of service:

  • infrastructure as a service (IaaS)
  • platform as a service (PaaS)
  • software as a service (SaaS)
